Victorian Racing Club:
The Art of Joy

Is technology able to decipher and express human emotions?

→           Live sports events can be tumultuous affairs. Squeezed into just a couple of hours is almost every feeling imaginable: suspense, relief, disappointment — and hopefully joy.

At the Melbourne Cup, these emotions get packed into day-long events in vibrant spaces that erupt with every horse that crosses the finish line. We were challenged to let curious onlookers gauge the vibe in the room without even setting foot inside, and getting technology to do the talking for us.

Processing data from eight microphones

We would position eight microphones around the room, each sending audio data to custom-built software. Our software would interpret the sentiment in the room.

Animated visuals driven by real-time sentiment data.

On the outside of the room was a large LED ‘happiness meter’. On this display, we would dynamically generate vibrant, swirling visuals that reflected the sentiment in the room, allowing passersby to gauge the level of excitement and activity in the room.

Kinetic lights also reacted by illuminating and moving vertically at different speeds, creating ambience inside the room.

LED tube lights installed in the centre of the room could fill with coloured light at different rates, transforming the space to reflect the mood of the guests.

Outside the room, passersby heard loud cheers accompanied by a spike in activity on the LED ‘happiness meter’ , sparking curiosity.

Some would cheer directly at the LED screen to see a reaction. Others moved inside to join the festivities.

Data visualisations can be driven by lots of sources. Here, we used microphones and sound to create visual art.

We love thinking outside the box when it comes to events. Talk to us and see what's possible.
